From then until the 1850s he spent most of his life in Italy and France engaged in trade, finally retiring to Bowerhouse near Dunbar. Family, personal and legal material predominates in this collection.

After his retirement he worked in the Chief Scientist's Division, Minister of Power, 1949-1960, and the British Coal Utilisation Research Association 1960-1963. The papers largely concern Forrester's position as Director of the Indian School of Mines.
